What counts as spam?
Any submission that is not related to the themes of this website, particularly if it contains external links, vulgarity, or illegal content, is considered to be spam. In particular, any submission whose main purpose is Search Engine Optimization will be rejected or removed.
There are two main kinds of spam submission that this website has to deal with: automated and manual.
Automated spam
These are requests submitted en masse by bots. They use brute force to send requests to a website, trying many known ways of submitting text in the hope of having it appear in comments or on wiki pages.
Most bots do not bother to try logging in or creating an account because it takes more complex software and much more time. There is probably a higher success rate by trying as many websites as possible than by spending more time trying to get round spam protection measures.
To prevent this kind of spam, only registered users may edit wiki pages or post comments without approval. Creating an account requires you to pass a CAPTCHA and supply a valid email address.
Manually submitted spam
This is submitted by humans. They are paid usually a very low wage to post links to websites in as many places as they can. They will create accounts and get past CAPTCHAs to do this. Often they will try to make the comment look authentic by referring to the website content or pasting something from a source like wikipedia.
The point of doing this is to get a better search ranking by search engines, which often rank sites by the number of other sites that link to them.
Any such comments and the associated account will be deleted within a few hours at most. The website owner alone decides whether a comment is acceptable.
Such submissions will not appear on this website, so please save everyone's time by not trying.
How you can help
- Please do not register an account unless you intend to post or edit something.
- Avoid submitting URLs of any kind unless they are relevant both to your comment and what you're commenting on.
- Do not reply to comments that look like spam, as your reply will be deleted along with the comment.
Future policy
Spam prevention measures are kept as unobtrusive as possible. It is a good thing that people can post anonymously if they wish. The current arrangements may change if the level and type of spam submission makes them impossible to maintain.
